Why Plitvice uses letters
Plitvice organises its trails into lettered walking programmes, each a set loop of a particular length that uses the park's boat and shuttle in a particular way. It sounds bureaucratic, but it's genuinely useful: once you know your letter, you know your distance, your time, which lake groups you'll see, and which entrance to start from. Choosing the right one before you arrive is the single best thing you can do to have a good day, because it matches the park to your time and your legs.
The full-day loops: C and H
If you have a full day and want to see everything, you want Route C or Route H. Both link the Upper and Lower Lakes with the scenic electric-boat crossing of Lake Kozjak, cover roughly eight kilometres over four to six hours, and hit every headline sight including Veliki Slap. The only real difference is the starting point: C begins at Entrance 1 (the busier, Lower-Lakes end), H at Entrance 2 (the quieter, Upper-Lakes end). If you can choose, H lets you start ahead of the bus crowds.
The shorter options: A and E
Short on time or not up for six hours of walking? Route A, from Entrance 1, covers the Lower Lakes and the Great Waterfall in two to three kilometres and two to three hours — the highlights reel, and the single best short walk in the park. Route E, from Entrance 2, does the Upper Lakes in a similar time. Doing one lake group well beats rushing both badly, so if your time is tight, pick A for the drama or E for the calm and walk it properly.
The full hike: K
Route K is the purist's option: the entire park on foot, around eighteen kilometres over six to eight hours, walking around Lake Kozjak instead of boating across it (bar one short boat leg). It's a real hike, and it rewards you with the whole park at a walking pace and long stretches with almost no one else. Only take it on if you're a confident walker with a full day and good weather — for most visitors, C or H sees everything with far less effort.
How to choose
Match the route to your day: a full day and both lake groups, take C or H (H to dodge crowds); a half day or tired legs, take A for the waterfalls or E for the quiet upper lakes; a serious walker with a whole day, take K. Whichever you pick, start early or late to beat the midday crush, and remember the boat and shuttle are included in your ticket — the letters tell you when you'll use them.
